Long-Term Disability Denials of POTS Syndrome Claims

Long-Term Disability Denials of POTS Syndrome Claims

Over the past few years we have represented many clients who have had Long Term Disability Insurance Denials of their POTS Syndrome claims. POTS or “Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome” is an unusual condition that causes the Autonomic Nervous System to malfunction.

POTS symptoms can include tachycardia, heart palpitations, chest pain, fainting, nausea, rapid gastric emptying, blood pooling in the extremities, sleep abnormalities, an inability to exert oneself, chronic headaches, fatigue, and difficulty thinking, concentrating or communicating. Even with minimal exertion, the POTS patient can suffer from an irregular heartbeat, which reduces the blood supply to the brain and can cause them to pass out. Simply standing up can be a struggle for a person with POTS.

The classic symptomology of POTS is well established, but because it is it is frequently misdiagnosed, it can takes an average of 5 years or more to properly diagnose.

Depending on the severity of the symptoms, it can be almost impossible for an individual with POTS Syndrome to be able to maintain employment. But unfortunately long-term disability insurance companies often misunderstand this serious disease, which frequently leads to the denial of long-term disability benefits.
